Cooking Brussel Sprouts

Most people don’t like brussels sprouts, because most people eat them overcooked. Once you try a nice steamed one, just a little bit crunchy, it should have a great nutty flavor. They go well with garlic flavors, onions, and different mustards. This article lists some different ideas for cooking brussel sprouts in ways that are simple, quick, delicious, and low calorie.

When preparing your vegetable to be steamed, you’ll want to let them sit for about ten minutes in a bowl of water. This way any dirt or debris that has collected under the leaves will find it’s way out and float up in the water. Once you’ve got them cleaned, you’ll want to either steam them whole, or cut them in half. Then you simply put them in your steamer, cooking them with whatever flavors you want (or adding the flavors afterward).

A nice simple way to eat them is to steam them with sliced onion, and then add melted butter, thyme, oregano, salt, and pepper. This is delicious and easy.

To compliment their great nutty flavor, toasted almond slivers to the end dish make a great addition. You can steam the brussels sprouts with some onion, and then mix it up with butter (optional, cut it out or use sparingly for a lower calorie dish) and some lemon juice, salt, and pepper.

To mix things up a bit and add some more vegetables in there, steam your sprouts with some new potatoes (quarter them and cook them on a separate tray for best cooking times). Once done, mix them up with some fresh chives, salt, and pepper.

Peppers also steam very well. Try steaming some peppers cut into strips with some brussels sprouts and then mixing them with some basil, mustard, butter, salt, and pepper. Whipping the flavors together with a fork and using them as a dip is a great way to really impress people, but still keep things really simple in the kitchen.

If you’re looking for a great dressing for your vegetables, try mixing up some olive oil, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, a couple cloves of garlic, salt, and pepper. Pour this on the plate and then place your vegetables on top. This is a great, light, easy to make dressing that you can roll your sprouts in. Whatever other vegetables you decide to steam with it (peppers, asparagus, potatoes, carrots, etc) will taste great in this simple dressing.

Mistakes To Avoid While Cooking Out On The Grill

Grilling outside can be fun activity in the summer months. However, a few mistakes can ruin a great meal or your entire day. Mistakes on the grill can be detrimental to the quality of your meal or your safety. To get the most out your grill, here are some mistakes to avoid.
Food Preparation
Your food should be fully prepared before cooking. You meats should be thawed before throwing it on the grill. Cooking frozen meat will prevent it from cooking thoroughly. You should food should be seasoned and marinated before grilling for maximum taste.
Bacteria Prevention
One raw food leaves your plate, the cooked food should not be placed on the same plate. The remnants from the raw meat can carry bacteria and spread to you cooked meat. Always have separate plates for cooked food and raw food.
Keep the Juices Inside
While cooking your meat, you shouldn’t poke too many holes in it. Poking holes will cause the juices to come out and dry out your meat. The juices helps your meat maintain its flavor, therefore you want to keep the juices inside. Juice drippings can also cause flare ups in gas grill that will also quickly dry out your meat and leave you with a messy grill.
Don’t Open the Lid Too Often
While you want to check your meat, you don’t want to open the lid too often. Constant opening and closing will cause your grill to lose temperature. The change in temperature can dry out your meat and will use more gas in the long run.
Stay Near Your Grill
Do not leave your grill unattended during use. Fires can spread quickly if you have a flare up and no one is around to control the situation. It is also advised that you keep a small fire extinguisher nearby just in case you get an uncontrollable fire.
Clean Your Grill
After a great dinner, the last thing any of us wants to do is clean the grill. If you want your grill to last a long time, regular cleaning is a must. The cleaning will prevent hard build up the will be nearly impossible to clean if you let it sit on a regular basis. The stuck on debris can cause flare ups during cooking.
Cool Your Grill
You grill should be cool before cleaning. Spraying oil on a hot surface can cause your grill to catch fire. Also, you want to make sure it’s completely cool before doing any maintenance because an unsuspecting hot spot can cause serious burns.

Let Us Fight Against The Illegal Cooking Oil

The illegal cooking oil is usually made from discarded kitchen wastes that have been refined. Looking clean and clear, it contains toxic substance such as aflatoxin, which can cause cancers. In China, underground oil refining businesses have grown pretty maturely. There is a whole set of procedures for producing illegal cooking oil.
As a country with prosperous restaurant businesses, the amount of kitchen waste produced on a daily basis in China is quite large, forming 40 percent of a citys total waste.
With its price being half that of ordinary cooking oil, a profit of 1.5 to 2 billion Yuan is produced in the entire alleged cooking oil business on the country every year. The profit margin is almost 200 percent. Its easy to understand why the lousiness is so hot. Said China Daily. In the current situation, preventing of the use of illegal cooking oil should begin its source, kitchen waste.
The first and foremost step is to ensure an official, standardized collection of kitchen waste. At present, the owners of the restaurants sell the kitchen wastes to the illegal cooking oil producers to make great profits. But if they have legal channels in which they can sell these wastes and earn some money, the use of these kitchen wastes can continue to enter the market with its sustained high profitability. The key point is to advance the technology in this industry. However, at present, the restaurants are unwilling to hire the citys sanitation workers for kitchen waste collection but to sell them to those illegal producers. The restaurants have to pay a certain fee if they hire the citys sanitation workers; whereas selling kitchen waste to private parties can earn them almost 10000 Yuan every year.
Second, the government should strengthen the supervision of the production and circulation of the illegal cooking oil. On the one hand, the cost of committing relevant crimes must be increased. Any party involved should be punished severely. On the other hand, the moral standards should be enhanced. People should be encouraged to take responsibility for the right of leading a health life for others as well as for themselves.
In my opinion, it is the basic right for people to take in health food everyday and everybody shoulders the responsibility to guarantee this basic human rights. As ordinary citizens, we cant merely depend on the government to settle this problem. Everybody has the responsibility to join in the fight against the illegal cooking oil and defend our own health.

Raw Food Diet Detox

A diet comprised of 100% uncooked food when used for the purpose of detoxification of the body is referred to as a raw food detox diet. Detoxification or detox refers to the process of elimination of toxins, produced either internally from metabolic wastes or coming from external sources such food and environment, that get accumulated in the body over a period of time, giving rise to a host of diseases.

A raw food detox diet primarily includes vegetarian or vegan foods, though sometimes meat and fish may be allowed too if one can manage to eat them raw. Such a diet promotes the elimination of harmful substances from the body through the body’s excretory organs like kidneys, bowel and skin.

How a raw food diet detox works?

The principle behind a raw food detox diet is the belief that food in its natural uncooked form has all the vital nutrients and enzymes intact, whereas cooking by conventional methods devitalizes the food due to breakdown of these substances. In a sense, raw food is a kind of living food, with a latent life force that under appropriate conditions facilitates germination and growth of a new plant from a seed.

Advocates of the raw food diet detox believe that when the body is fed with foods that are rich in life force, digestive enzymes, vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals, while at the same time being deprived of devitalized and toxin-laden foods, it gets into the self-detoxification and cleansing mode.

What goes wrong during cooking?

When food is heated to temperatures above 117 ºF (47 ºC) for more than a few minutes: (i) a substantial amount of vital digestive enzymes and nutrients get destroyed; (ii) proteins get denatured and coagulated, causing deficiency of many amino acids; (iii) fats when overheated result in the formation of carcinogenic substances.

When the food is cooked in water, the water-soluble minerals get lost due to leaching (even more intensely if one adds salt while cooking), unless one uses the leftover water for gravies or soups. In fact, scientific studies have shown that many of the vegetables lose their antioxidant benefits when boiled or microwaved.

It only gets worse when it comes to ready-to-eat commercially manufactured foods, which may even contain highly detrimental substances like acrylamides. It is for all these reasons that a raw food diet has emerged as the favorite detox diet.

Best Foods for Weight Lifters

Our bodies react in different ways to the different types of food and supplements we consume. Taking an anabolic steroid has the potential to enhance your performance but you also need a good diet to help sustain your muscle growth and fitness level. The following foods are ideal for doing just that:

  • Meat – as long as it’s lean. Weight lifting requires protein and lean meat is a fantastic source. However, red meat and processed red meat have been shown to have health risks, so going with protein sources such as chicken and turkey are the healthier choice.
  • Dairy – as long as it’s low-fat. Not only does dairy have the muscle-building amino acids found in protein, it also has calcium which is ideal for both muscle and bone maintenance. Skim milk powder is a popular option for weight lifters. It can be easily added to protein shakes and also provides vitamin D, another important element in bone health.
  • Seafood and fish-Oily fish such as salmon and sardines are a rich source of Omega-3 fatty acids which are extremely important for overall health, especially for the brain and heart. Shrimp and crab provide iodine, a mineral essential for body growth and development. Avoid large fish including shark, swordfish and tilefish which often have high concentrations of mercury and other pollutants.
  • Vegetables – It’s not all about the meat and protein. Weightlifters still need plenty of a wide variety of vegetables in order to get the antioxidants and nutrients the body needs for energy and protection from free radical damage. Vegetables are packed with anti-cancer agents and are essential for good health.
  • Red wine – A glass a day for women and two for men is perfect for getting the heart-healthy benefits of resveratrol and other antioxidants.

You can always buy anabolic steroids but be sure to eat a healthy diet for maximum effectiveness.

Do Not Let Business Travel Disrupt Your Fitness

You have your ticket, you are packed, and the airport van is picking you up for your next business trip. Leaving Sunday afternoon and returning Friday evening has become routine over the last couple of years. You ran your errands and spent time with the family. You managed a brief workout early Saturday morning so you could attend the kid’s soccer games and birthday parties. Business travel is difficult. Lately you are feeling your clothes tightening around your waste. It has not gotten to the point of buying new clothes, yet. Ask yourself if this sounds familiar. There are more and more business professionals challenged with stressful jobs compounded by stressful travel. Surely, this takes a toll on the family and personal life[1], but even more important it could be destroying your health. When your health is gone, your family and job is in jeopardy.

Health and fitness for traveling business professionals is a serious concern, “But it is also a source of a variety of stresses, often overlooked or denied by both organizations and travelers themselves. The World Bank, studying its own travelers, discovered that both their physical and mental health-care claims were significantly greater than those of nontravelers.“[2] The typical executive travels 3-5 days per week. They eat ninety-five percent of their meals in airports, restaurants, or fast food establishments. They eat late while entertaining clients. Most of them do not exercise on the road even though gyms are available in hotels. In addition, most traveling business professionals do not get the deep sleep they need. Any medical professional, or fitness expert, will tell you this lifestyle is a recipe for disaster.

There are several resources offering ways to eat right and workout while traveling.[3] Videos abound on exercises you can use while traveling.[4] Still with all this information available, the vast majority of business travelers fail to eat right and workout on the road. Why is this? The problem is more behavior than access to good food and workout facilities. The solution is more education about fitness, not more facilities, workouts, and supplements. People who understand “why” about anything tend to accept and change more than those who do not take the time to understand a subject. Think about this principal. Continuing education is designed to make you more proficient at your job. The more you know and experience the more valuable you become to your employer. Your self-worth and self-esteem increases. This is true when it comes to fitness. The difference is you are your own boss. Here lies the root cause of the problem. If fitness is not a priority in your life, you have too many irons in the fire, you are stretched thin, and now your travel time takes up twenty percent of your waking hours, then you will put fitness on the back burner. The next thing you know you are twenty-five pounds heavier, your body fat percent is nearing obesity, and you have little energy at the end of the workday. At this point, your doctor informs you that your blood pressure is elevating and recommends blood pressure medicine.

A CEO who has all the distractions mentioned earlier recognizes the problem, does not drop everything, and still attacks the specific problem. They would contract a professional, e.g. lawyer, CPA, or consultant to help them
